As South Africa gears up to host the G20 Summit, several traffic disruptions and road closures have been planned until Sunday, 23 November.
With Johannesburg set to welcome world leaders for Africa’s first-ever G20 Summit, a series of traffic disruptions and road closures have been announced that will remain in place until Sunday, 23 November.
TRAFFIC DISRUPTIONS
The City of Johannesburg said these measures are necessary and will target high-security routes, including major national highways and central urban arteries. The operation is scheduled for Saturday, 22 November, and Sunday, 23 November, between 7 am and 8 pm.
When the convoys are moving, roads will be closed off completely, and movement from road users, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists will be limited. Roads will reopen as soon as the convoys pass through the affected routes, with delays of approximately 30 minutes to one hour in some areas. The city said that clear signage, traffic officers, and real-time updates will be provided to guide road users. Access for emergency and essential services will always be prioritised.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
It also provided alternative routes around Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane:
“Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and consider alternative routes where possible. These measures are essential to enhance public safety, enforce traffic compliance, and support ongoing traffic law enforcement initiatives, including vehicle inspections and congestion management,” said the city.
